DevelopMentor - Reading Between the Lines

In Don Box's latest post, he makes a comment about his old company that he says “confirmed some of my intuitions”. As most know, his old company was DevelopMentor, and there have been some interesting newsworthy items the past year or so. Consider:

Now, I know that DevelopMentor contracts with independent consultants/trainers and other companies to do a lot of their training, but I think there's something else to all this, especially when Don makes comments like that. I've always held DevelopMentor in the highest regard for their training, due in large part to their trainers. Everyone there is top shelf and most are industry experts and authors. Does any of this mean we'll now get the same high-quality material, but delivered to us by a dry, boring trainer? God I hope not.

Of course, I could be playing conspiracy-theorist here, but it does make you wonder...

You neglected to mention these fine individuals, all of whom helped make DM great in the 1990's and have now moved on:

Tim Ewald, Martin Gudgin, Doug Tunure, Dave Schmidt, Steve Rodgers, Art Baker, Craig Andera, Scott Bloom, Shannon Ahern, Peg Bennett, and Bill Williams.

I don't think there's any conspiracy though.

We had a nice collaborative environment in the 1990's.

Now a lot of us have moved on to other environments.

For me, it was Indigo.

For Aaron and Keith and Fritz and Mike, it was PluralSight. I wish them all the best and believe they're on a path to having a collaborative environment that surpasses what we had together in the 1990's.

Don - yeah I did forget those people (although a couple I wasn't aware of). I actually had a chance to spend time with Dave Schmidt at PDC '03 for an hour or so at The Standard. He's also with Microsoft as an Architect Evangelist. Good guy.

Dave also has the distinction of having the most children of anyone I've ever met in this industry. In fact, he's the only one I know personally who has ten or more children. Amazing guy actually.

Anyway, DM's loss. Our gain. Hopefully the last one out will turn the lights off before they leave...

Wow, more than 10 kids! That certainly didn't come up in our conversation. I'm even more impressed with Dave now. If I ever run into him again, I'll be sure to ask him about his brood :-)

And I can confirm that they were born by a single woman, one at a time!

I work with Dave- I didn't know he had that many kids though. Very cool guy- I'm hoping to interview him for Channel9 as a field correspondent.

That would be awesome if you got Dave on Channel9. You'll have to let me know when that will happen.
