A couple weeks ago I bought a new laptop (with 2GB RAM - oh yeah) and went through the usual exercise of getting all the necessary software and tools installed on it. One of the last things I've gotten around to installing is a feed aggregator. I had been using RssBandit for quite some time and liked it, but I thought I might try a different one.
James is a big user of Bloglines and he convinced me to give it another shot. I say “another shot” because I used Bloglines way back and didn't like it at all. It was slow and I didn't care for the UI at all. Well, it's safe to say that Bloglines is still slow and the UI is still not very good. I just don't like it. I think for me I prefer to download my feeds to my desktop and read them that way. I know a lot of people like Bloglines, but I don't think it's that good.
I've heard good things about Omea Reader (from JetBrains) and decided to give that a try. I must say I liked it immediately. The install was smooth, it imported my subscriptions from Bloglines with ease, it's fast, and the UI is quite nice. Like RssBandit, it has search capabilities and you can easily categorize your feeds. Another nice feature is it shows you all the feeds from Today, Yesterday, This Week, Last Week, This Month, and Last Month. And to round it out it even comes with a Firefox extension.
So I'm gonna stick with Omea Reader for the time being as my RSS feed aggregator of choice. If you've been thinking about trying out different feed readers, you should definitely try it as well.
